Rudy's Story:
This city wide day was created to inspire kindness within our community and within our lives by leading, educating, and encouraging compassion, gratitude, and joy. The perfect way to honor Rudy Abrego, whom was a truly selfless person. Rudy's motivation was to help those in need and to make Aransas Pass a wonderful place to be a part of. A life-long resident of Aransas Pass for more than 53 years Rudy moved here from Corpus Christi and was employed with AEP for 50 years. During that time Rudy dedicated countless hours volunteering in the community for various civic & non-profit organizations, youth groups and residents. He was known in the community to do things from helping the homeless with a hot meal to mowing the lawn of an unsightly unclaimed lot. Often times he made his way around town offering a helping hand to elderly residents who needed yard work or simple home repairs. During his time here in Aransas Pass he has served on the Advisory Committee to the Mayor, a group that was tasked with working to improve, enhance and beautify city streets and parks. He was a dedicated Board Member of Aransas Pass ISD, and a proud supporter of our “Panther” students. He served three (5 year) terms on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was the 2016 Chairman and when not serving on the Chamber Board, he consistently volunteered for the Chamber by working various events. In 2009 he was named Citizen of the Year at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet. He was a key logistics organizer for more than two and a half decades of Aransas Pass’s signature event Shrimporee! From sun up to sun down and into the night, he made sure the even went off with little to no error. He was President of Aransas Pass Little League for ten years, a Board Member of Aransas Pass Housing Authority and also served on the Aransas Pass Tri County Christian Service Center Board. Rudy’s humanity and his tireless efforts undeniably made Aransas Pass a better to place for all of us. He demonstrated his passion for Aransas Pass daily with his selfless acts of giving back to the community he loved. His hard work and dedication to help with countless projects within the city have resulted in many positive outcomes, projects and accomplishments.
